This post is really special to me as it’s dedicated to my dad (or Papa as I call him).
With Father’s Day coming up, I have been pondering what I can do for Papa to say thank you for everything he has done for me. He has been there through thick and thin. Always patient and loving as I fumbled my way through life. His wisdom and guidance has always been a source of comfort for me. I consider myself really lucky to have him in life (Yes, I can be really cheesy sometimes!)
Papa loves his whiskey – it’s been his tipple of choice for as long as I can remember. So this year, I decided to create a special drink in his honour in collaboration with The Glenlivet. The timing couldn’t be more perfect as they have just launched the The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve in honour of the uniquely smooth and fruity taste, founder George Smith envisioned in 1824.
I absolutely love that beautiful pale gold colour of this whisky..
Skilful selection of casks enhances the signature fruity flavours of The Glenlivet, while whisky taken from the traditional oak casks is complemented by the selective use of American first-fill casks to give a hint of creamy sweetness. On the nose there are delicate aromas of citrus fruit, while the palate is sweet, with notes of oranges and pears, and hints of toffee apples and candy. The long, creamy, smooth finish makes the Founders Reserve my perfect whisky for my special cocktail for Papa – Founding Father
The Founding Father is a simple but delicate whisky based cocktail which uses three ingredients to give you a sophisticated drink that you cannot not love. A combination of The Glenlivet Founders Reserve, Ginger Wine and some Spiced Orange Syrup is all you need to create this beauty.
Making a Spiced Orange Syrup is simpler than you think. You will need –
- 170 grams granulated sugar
- 255 ml water
- 1 Orange (you will only need the peel)
- 1/2 stick cinnamon
- 2 whole cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Stir together the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Using a potato peeler, peel the skin off the orange avoiding the bitter pith (the white part) and drop it in your sugar syrup. Add the cinnamon stick, cloves and nutmeg and bring to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes and stir occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Once cool, pour the syrup over a sieve and discard the solids.
Presto! You now have freshly made Spiced Orange Syrup. Store in the fridge in an air tight container and use it over the next two weeks to make yourself a Founding Father or anything else than needs a bit of spiced orange goodness.
To make a Founding Father, start by pouring 50ml of the golden liquid (The Glenlivet Founders Reserve incase you were wondering) into a tumbler and stir with ice.
Top this up with 25ml Ginger Wine and 15ml of the Spiced Orange Syrup and stir. Add more (or less) syrup to taste.
Told you this was a simple cocktail. The ginger, orange and spices brings out the zesty notes in the whisky while enchancing the pear, apple and toffee notes. It’s delicate, sophisticated and just very special. I know Papa will absolutely love it!
This one is for you Papa. #CheersDad
A special thank you to my friend Kevin from Door 74 in Amsterdam who helped me with bringing this cocktail to life. He recently won World Class for Netherland (translation – he knows his booze!) and is currently trying to revive the Whisky Mac, the inspiration for this drink. Make sure you go say hi, if you find yourself in Amsterdam.
