Yes, I am not the biggest fan of restaurant chains.
I prefer my independent joints but Pizza Express on Peter Street is not just any restaurant chain. Situated close to the theatres (and home), this Grade II listed building doesn’t look like your standard chain. It’s bright and airy with high ceilings and large windows. Add to that the familiar Pizza Express offering and exceptional service and you are on to a winner!
Seb and I visited on a Tuesday evening. It was raining (as usual), we had had long days at work and I was really tired. All I wanted was some good hot food and Pizza Express definitely didn’t disappoint.
The very friendly restaurant manager greeted us at the door and showed us to our table when we arrived. I already felt a lot better as I walked in and smelt the familiar smell of pizza being cooked in the oven.
The Pizza Express on Peter Street is a big space complete with a mezzanine area and an open kitchen. The open kitchen is the first thing you see as you walk in and it’s quite fascinating to see the chefs work their magic and dish out the amazing Italian food.
We decided to take a seat in one of the corners next to one of the large windows. It was nice being able to watch people move around outside on the busy streets of Manchester. Our very informative waitress Becca came over and handed us menus and talked us through some of the options and bought us some wine ofcourse 🙂
Ordering at Pizza Express was always going to be tricky for me. If you don’t know, I have given up pizza for the year – it’s one of my random New Year resolutions and I have done pretty well so far. But I was surprised at the number of non-pizza options on the menu.
We started off with some Oven Baked Taleggio Cheese which is Pizza Express’ take on the classic cheese fondue. Chunks of taleggio cheese oven baked with rosemary and a four cheese sauce served with warm dough sticks looked too good to say no to!
Our starter definitely didn’t disappoint. The cheese was perfect and full of flavour and dipping the warm dough sticks into the cheese fondue felt so good. This was exactly what we needed after a long day at work!
I even caught Seb trying to lick the pot clean! That’s how good this starter was!
I told Becca that I couldn’t eat pizza and she suggested an alternative, the Cavatappi Formaggi, which is their take on mac and cheese. I was definitely in for a treat! The cavatappi spirals combined with the four cheese sauce, béchamel, taleggio cheese, gorgonzola D.O.P, Gran Moravia cheese and mozzarella is a cheese lover’s paradise! You have the option to add some hot soft n’duja sausage for an extra £1.50 which I obviously said yes to!
I was so glad I went for the hot soft n’duja sausage, it really added an extra kick to the dish. I enjoyed every single bite of my main and would definitely recommend it to anybody who wants an alternative to pizza.
If you know Seb, you already know that he is obsessed with pizza. He would happily eat a full pizza every night if he had an opportunity to. So taking Seb to Pizza Express is like letting a child loose in a candy store! After a lot of deliberation, Seb decided to go for the Vesuvio, a limited edition pizza from their Romana Pizza range.
Want to know whats the Vesuvio is? You are in for a real treat here! It’s pepperoni and hot soft n’duja sausage on a creamy sweet potato base baked with mozzarella and finished with rocket, shaved Gran Moravia cheese and chilli oil.
Yes, it tasted as amazing as it looks. Enough said!
As you probably already know, I have a sweet tooth and can’t say no desserts and the dessert menu at Pizza Express was too tempting to resist. I went for the Lemon Meringue Torta. The lemon pastry tart with meringue was absolutely delicious – the flavours were delicate and thoroughly satisfying!
Seb went for the Banoffee Pie served with vanilla ice cream and this was just as delicious. We couldn’t decide which one we liked more.
After all the food, we decided to pay the bill and call it a day. Pizza Express was exactly what we needed that day. We left for home content and ready for bed.
This Pizza Express is definitely not ‘just another chain restaurant’. The food they dish out is top notch and the menu has so many surprises, you will have a hard time picking just one dish. Speaking to some of the staff here, you can tell how passionate they are about the food they serve and the service is very personal. Becca was friendly, chatty and made us feel so special. I will definitely be going back soon.
